Rental assistance

At Abby Road Housing Co-operative Ltd., we believe everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home.

To help make housing more affordable, some of our households receive rental assistance. These subsidies make sure that members with lower incomes can still live at Abby Road and take part in our co-op community.

BRIDGING THE GAP

About our subsidized units

Some households at Abby Road get help through programs from the Federal Community Housing Initiative (FCHI-2) and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

These households have subsidized housing charges, which means the amount you pay is based on your income. You’ll pay about 30% of your total income before taxes each month. The other households have regular (market) housing charges.

All members — whether they pay the regular rate or the subsidized rate — have the same responsibilities and voting rights in the co-op.

How subsidy works

The subsidy program helps cover the difference between what a household earns and what housing costs.

The amount of subsidy you get is checked once a year and based on your household income.

Each year, you’ll need to share updated income information to stay eligible.

If your income changes during the year, you must let the Co-op know right away.

This helps keep things fair for everyone and makes sure the Co-op continues to receive funding to support members who need it.

How to apply

If your household needs a rental subsidy:

  1. Fill out the Membership Application Form.

  2. Fill out the Subsidy Application Form (you can contact us for a copy).

  3. Send both forms together with a $35 non-refundable administration fee.

You must report all household income so we can check if you qualify. If any information is missing or incorrect, your application may not be accepted.

Eligibility and reporting

To stay eligible for subsidy help, members must:

  • Report all sources of household income, such as wages, benefits, and pensions.

  • Provide income documents each year for an annual review.

  • Tell the Co-op right away if your job, income, or household changes.

These rules are part of our agreement with CMHC and FCHI-2. They help make sure subsidies are given out fairly and follow federal guidelines.

A shared commitment

Abby Road Housing Co-operative is proud to offer a mix of below market-rate and subsidized housing, creating a diverse, inclusive, and sustainable community. Whether you receive a subsidy or not, every member contributes equally to the life and success of the Co-op.

Thank you for helping us uphold our shared values of cooperation, respect, and financial transparency.
