A community where everyone contributes

Since opening our doors in January 1989Abby Road Housing Co-operative Ltd. has been home to a diverse community of able-bodied and physically disabled residents living side by side.

Together, we’ve built an inclusive, affordable, and welcoming community — one that thrives on cooperation, respect, and shared responsibility.

WHO WE ARE

We are a non-profit, member governed and operated housing co-operative

Abby Road is a non-profit, member governed and operated housing co-operative located in Edmonton’s Garneau neighbourhood.

We provide affordable, accessible housing for individuals and families who want to live in a community built on collaboration and care.

Our co-op includes 49 units, of which 23 are wheelchair-adapted and 26 are standard.
Each home is part of a shared community that values both independence and connection.

We are not a landlord-tenant property, and we are not social, public, or emergency housing.

Instead, we’re a democratically run community — one vote per member — where every voice matters and every contribution counts.

WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT

Co-operative living

Living in a co-operative means you’re not just renting a home — you’re helping to sustain a community.

What members contribute

  • Participate in community meetings and committees and social events

  • Volunteer time, skills, and ideas to keep the co-op running smoothly

  • Support neighbours and contribute to a positive environment

  • Respect the co-op’s bylaws and democratic decisions

What members gain

  • Long-term housing stability in a safe, inclusive community

  • A say in decisions that affect your home and neighbourhood

  • Opportunities to learn, lead, and connect

  • The satisfaction of knowing your contribution makes a difference

As one member put it, “We don’t just live here — we help make Abby Road what it is.”

Skills that strengthen our community

We’re always looking for members who bring practical skills, creative ideas, and a cooperative spirit.

Skills that benefit the co-op include:

  • Building and maintenance

  • Plumbing and electrical

  • Administration and bookkeeping

  • Community engagement and communication

But above all, we value reliability, respect, and teamwork.

If you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and contribute — in whatever way you can — you’ll fit right in.
